Background

One of the oldest ships in the Kingdom's Navy, the Bastion-class Frigate was nonetheless the Navy's best choice until the introduction of the Vigorous-class Frigate in 4 BBY as a Frigate between Corvette & Cruiser. Over 40 years old by 2 BBY, the Bastion-class is slow (30 MGLT) & ungainly, although it is equipped with a Class 1 hyperdrive. At 400 meters, its circular main body is sandwiched between four wedge shaped decks of equal length & width to the main body at dorsal & ventral and starboard & port and an array of 3 circular engines in the rear of the main body and a bridge located on the bow dorsal wedge shaped deck, the frigate had powerful weapons and a bow hanger bay located directly in the middle of the main body.

The ship had a thick double hull (800 RU), respectable deflector shields (1,000 SBD), and a impressive armament of 12 X17 Turbolasers (3 in a cluster on each wedge deck, roughly in the middle), 20 Quad Laser Cannons (4 on each wedge deck in 2 clusters of 2, with 4 guarding the hanger opening at the four corners), and 5 Tractor Beam Projectors (1 on each wedge deck and 1 at the mouth of the hanger).

It could carry 12 Jump Fighter Mk 4's, 6 StarDrive Interceptor Mk 2's, & 6 FarSpace Long Range Bombers. It also maintained 4 Delta-class JV-7 Escort Shuttles & 2 M-1FD Planetary Drop Ships, as well as 100 Naval Guards for security. An additional 300 of His Majesty's Infantry (Infantrymen & Reconnaissance Snipers) provided a ground force complement with 16 All Terrain Recon Transports, 8 All Terrain Personal Transports (AT-PT), and 6 Multipurpose Trucks.

Designed & built by the now defunct StarDrive Military Company, CargoCorp Interplanetary Business Group now holds the rights to & repairs of Bastion-class after buying StarDrive Military Company in 42 BBY. Despite the introduction of the newer Vigorous-class Frigate, CargoCorp has pushed for refitting & updating older Bastion-class frigates in "service update" packages (updated systems & newer engines pushing up to 50 MGLT) to fulfill the need of a "heavy frigate" with the generally accepted failure of the King I-class Battlecruiser. With the service updates, the Kingdom's Navy has held onto just over 100 Bastion-class vessels until 10 ABY, mostly in Planetary Defense Forces; despite this extended life, the once proud fleet of over 800 such vessels has been mostly sold off, scrapped, or used as target practice. Generally speaking, even "service updated" Bastion-class Frigates are prone to a high rate of breakdowns, system mishaps, & structural failures due to wear & tear on the hulls.

CargoCorp is in the process of designing & developing a Bastion II-class Assault Frigate for release in 2 ABY, although it is unknown if the price tag is too much for the Jod Military Forces to accept.
